The problem he started with
Surgical site infections and drug-resistant bacteria.
Ultraviolet light has killed bacteria reliably since the 1930s. The obstacle was never whether it worked; it was that conventional germicidal UV at 254 nm damages human skin and eyes, so the room has to be empty. That makes it useless in exactly the places where infection actually spreads — an operating theatre during surgery, a filling line with operators on it, a waiting room full of people.
David Brenner's question was whether a shorter wavelength could keep the germicidal effect and lose the harm. Not shield people from the light — make the light itself unable to reach the living tissue.
The insight is about size, not about dose
At 222 nm the light is absorbed almost immediately by protein. It stops in the outermost layer of dead skin cells and in the tear film of the eye, and never reaches a living cell. A bacterium or a virus has no such layer to hide behind — it is far too small.
Roughly to scale
Outer dead layer of skin — tens of micrometres thick
A bacterium — around one micrometre
A virus — around a tenth of that
The light cannot cross the first bar. It does not need to cross the other two.

Center for Radiological Research
Higgins Professor of Radiation Biophysics at Columbia University, and Director of its Center for Radiological Research. He read physics at Oxford, took his doctorate at Surrey, and began his career applying quantum mechanics to radiation therapy before turning to the biological effects of radiation at both ends of the dose scale — the very high doses of cancer treatment and the very low ones of everyday exposure.
Among his honours are Oxford's Weldon Prize and the Radiation Research Society's Failla Gold Medal. The far-UVC work began as a practical question from that low-dose research: whether there was a wavelength germicidal enough to be useful and short enough to be stopped by the dead outer layer of skin.
In his own words
A new weapon in the fight against superbugs
Brenner set out the idea at TED in 2017, before any of it was a product. No jargon, no slides full of spectra — the clearest explanation of far-UVC anyone has given, and worth watching before you read a single specification.
TED2017
He returned in 2020 with
"Can light stop the coronavirus?"
Then he spent a decade proving it
An idea at TED is worth nothing on a factory floor. What matters is the sequence of peer-reviewed papers behind it — first that it is safe, then that it works on airborne virus, then that it works in a real room with people in it.

Germicidal, and safe on skin
222 nm killed MRSA efficiently, and produced none of the skin damage caused by conventional germicidal UV in the same experiment.

Airborne influenza, at a very small dose
A dose of 2 mJ/cm² inactivated more than 95% of aerosolised H1N1 influenza — a fraction of the exposure a person may safely receive across a working day.

Airborne human coronaviruses
The same approach applied to airborne coronaviruses, published as the pandemic was under way.

99.8% — in an occupied room
The study that moved this out of the laboratory. In a real, occupied room, airborne murine norovirus — non-enveloped, and one of the hardest viruses to inactivate — fell by 99.8%, with lamps operating inside current exposure guidance.

Worth saying plainly: this study used far-UVC fixtures from another manufacturer, not the ones we install. It is evidence for the wavelength and for the room physics — not for our brand. Anyone citing it as proof of their own product is overreaching.

Brenner's own summary of the 2024 result: had that virus been a disease-causing one, far-UVC would have given far more protection against airborne transmission than any ventilation system.

Why the filter is the whole invention
And why a cheaper 222 nm lamp is not the same product.
A krypton-chloride excimer lamp does not emit one clean wavelength. Its main output is at 222 nm, but it also produces a tail above 230 nm — and that tail behaves like ordinary UVC. It penetrates. It damages. The patented short-pass filter that removes it is not an accessory to the lamp; it is the thing that was invented.
Unfiltered 222 nm lamps are widely sold, and they look identical in a photograph. They are not the same equipment, they are not covered by the safety research on this page, and we do not supply them. Independently measured, they also produce more than twice the ozone of the filtered module.
