In short. This site sets no cookies of its own and runs no visitor analytics. Our host, Cloudflare, can set a strictly necessary security cookie in the rare case that it has to check whether a visitor is a person rather than an automated program. The only other cookies are those TED sets if you choose to play the talk on the Invention page — and nothing loads from TED until you press play.

1 · What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device, so that the site can recognise your session, remember a setting, or measure how it is used. Some are deleted when you close the browser ("session"); others last for a set period. The same rules apply to similar techniques such as local storage.

2 · The law that applies

Storing information on your device, or reading it, requires your prior consent under section 99(5) of the Cyprus Law 112(I)/2004 on Electronic Communications and Postal Services, which transposes Article 5(3) of Directive 2002/58/EC. The only exceptions are cookies whose sole purpose is to carry a communication, or which are strictly necessary for a service you have explicitly asked for. The Commissioner for Personal Data Protection has made clear (announcement of 31 July 2019) that "by continuing to browse you accept cookies" is not consent: consent must be given by a clear action before any non-essential cookie is set, and must be as easy to refuse as to give. Where a cookie processes personal data, the GDPR applies as well; consent is then the legal basis under Article 6(1)(a).

3 · Strictly necessary cookies — no consent needed

Set by Cloudflare, the network that hosts and protects this site, and only when one of its security checks is needed. They identify no one and are not used for tracking. Names, purposes and durations as published by Cloudflare:

Language. Choosing Greek or English simply opens the other address (/el/). Nothing is stored to remember it.

4 · Cookies set only with your consent

  • Visitor statistics. None. We do not run analytics on this site.
  • Embedded video. The Invention page offers a talk from TED. Nothing is loaded from TED until you press play; when you do, TED sets its own cookies under its own policy. Pressing play is your consent. If you prefer, the talk is also available directly on ted.com.

We use no advertising networks, no social-media pixels and no cross-site tracking of any kind.

5 · Your choices

No banner. Because the site sets no non-essential cookies of its own, there is nothing to accept or refuse when you arrive. The TED talk. If you played it, TED's cookies sit in your browser; deleting them there withdraws your consent. Your browser. Every browser lets you view, block and delete cookies; blocking Cloudflare's security cookies may stop you passing a security check.
