Suspensions of S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli, S. enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium, C. jejuni, vegetative B. cereus and vegetative C. sporogenes were irradiated with 222- or 254-nm UVC at various irradiation doses, and the numbers of viable bacteria were counted by colony formation. In the case of S. aureus, irradiation with 6 mJ/cm2 reduced the bacterial number 104-fold, and the bacterial number was reduced to an undetectable level when irradiated with 12 mJ/ cm2 of both UVC wavelengths.
